The experience

The Terracotta Warriors sit in three excavation pits east of Emperor Qin Shihuang's tomb, about 40 kilometers from Xi'an city center. Discovered in 1974, the army of more than 8,000 clay soldiers was buried to guard the man who first unified China. Each warrior is life-sized and individually sculpted: faces, armor, weapons all distinct. You move through the museum at your own pace, viewing the figures in their original positions and in display cases, along with bronze chariots and other artifacts from the Qin Dynasty.

The ticket guarantees your entry on the date and time you choose, so you won't arrive to find the day sold out. If you pick the option with a guide, an English speaker meets you at your hotel or airport and drives you there in an air-conditioned car or minivan, then walks the site with you to explain the history and the excavation. The tour runs 4 to 5 hours. If you book the ticket alone, you arrange your own transport and explore independently: the entrance fee and booking service are included either way.

The museum is wheelchair accessible and suitable for all fitness levels. Infants and small children can use a pram or stroller. Specialized infant seats are available in the car if you add that option.
