The experience

You land at Pudong International Airport with eight hours before your next flight. Instead of waiting in the terminal, the guide meets you at baggage claim and takes you straight into Shanghai. The route moves through four distinct neighborhoods: Yu Garden in the old city center, where you walk through a classical Chinese garden, temple grounds and a traditional bazaar; the Bund, the former British waterfront with views across the Huangpu River to the modern finance district; Xintiandi in the old French Concession, where restored shikumen houses now hold restaurants and galleries; and the markets and streets around the old city wall. The pace is built for the layover window: seven hours of actual touring, with time left to get back to the airport before your connection.

How you travel depends on your group size. Parties of one to three use the Maglev train from the airport to the city center, then taxis between stops. This keeps costs down and moves you quickly through Shanghai's traffic. Groups of four or more get a private vehicle for all transfers, which means no waiting for connections and no switching between transport types. Either way, the guide handles the route and the timing, and snacks are included to keep you going through the afternoon.

Wear comfortable walking shoes. You'll cover ground on foot through gardens, markets and street-level neighborhoods. The tour runs in all weather, so dress for the season. If you're not able to clear customs for any reason, you'll need to arrange your own alternative. There's no refund for same-day cancellations.

What is Yu Garden like when we get there?

Yu Garden is the old city's centerpiece: a classical Chinese garden with pavilions and walkways, a temple, and a traditional bazaar where vendors sell crafts and local goods. You walk through it as part of the tour, not just pass by.

How much time do we actually spend sightseeing versus traveling?

The tour is seven hours of guide time from airport pickup to airport drop-off. That includes all the stops and the travel between them, so the actual sightseeing time depends on how many stops you visit and how long you linger at each one.

Do we have to use the Maglev train if we're a small group?

For one to three people, the tour uses the Maglev train from the airport to the city and taxis between stops. Groups of four or more get a private vehicle for all transfers instead.

What's the difference between the Bund and Xintiandi?

The Bund is the former British colonial waterfront along the Huangpu River, known for its 19th-century architecture and views across to the modern skyline. Xintiandi is in the old French Concession and features restored shikumen houses, traditional Shanghai residences, now converted into shops, galleries and restaurants.

Is lunch included, or do we need to eat on our own?

Snacks are included, but lunch is not. You'll have time to eat during the tour, and there are restaurants and food vendors throughout the neighborhoods you visit.
