The experience
The Temple of Confucius stands as the oldest site on this tour, built in 478BC and rebuilt through fifteen major renovations across the Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. Your guide leads you through more than three hundred buildings arranged in halls and courtyards, pointing out the yellow roof-tiles and red-painted walls set against dark-green pines: a deliberate color contrast that echoes imperial palace design. You'll see the statue of Confucius, examine stone tablets and steles, and learn how the architecture itself carries meaning. The temple sits at the heart of Qufu's identity as the hometown of Confucius, the philosopher and educator who lived during the Spring and Warring Period (770–221BC).
After the temple, you walk through a small market to reach the Kong Family Mansion, which comprises 152 buildings and 480 rooms. The first structure was built in 1038, originally connected directly to the temple, and descendants of Confucius lived here until 1937. Your guide explains how the family conducted elaborate religious ceremonies tied to plantings, harvests, honoring the dead and birthdays. Then comes lunch (a meal of Shandong flavor served in a restaurant) before you travel by car or tuk-tuk to the final stop.
Kong Forest Cemetery has held the graves of Confucius and his descendants for more than two thousand years. Over 20,000 trees grow among the tombstones, temples, pavilions and sculptures. About 3,600 tombstones from the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties still stand. It is the largest, oldest and best-preserved single-family cemetery in China. After the tour ends, you can explore on your own, and your guide can help you find a taxi to your next destination.
