Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Shanhaiguan and Great Wall

  • Visit Shanhaiguan Pass fortress
  • See Old Dragon's Head at the sea
  • Hike Jianshan section of Great Wall
  • Dine at traditional local restaurant

The experience

Eight hours takes you through three distinct stops that trace the Great Wall from its eastern edge to its origins. You start at Shanhaiguan Pass, the strategic fortress built in 1381 by Ming general Xu Da and known as the "First Pass Under Heaven": the point where the mountains meet the sea that gave the pass its name. From there, you move to Old Dragon's Head (Laolongtou), the exact spot where the wall descends to the Bohai Sea, a sight most visitors to the Great Wall never see. The third stop is Jianshan, located about 3 kilometers north of the pass, where the wall begins its climb inland. This section, built over 600 years ago in the early Ming Dynasty, earns its nickname "First Mountain of the Great Wall" because it is the first mountain the wall ascends as it stretches westward across northern China.

Your guide is a live English speaker who knows the local history: the role Shanhaiguan played as a critical defense against invasions from Manchuria for nearly 300 years, and why Xu Da's fortress design mattered to the Ming capital. The Jianshan section includes a scenic hike on partly restored wall and partly original, untouched stone, so you walk on both the preserved and the rugged versions. A private air-conditioned vehicle and driver handle the route between stops, and the day ends with lunch at a traditional local restaurant away from the tourist crowds.

Entrance tickets to all three sites, tolls, parking and local taxes are included. Hotel pickup is arranged at a time that works for your schedule.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Chinese.

What is Old Dragon's Head and why does it matter?

Old Dragon's Head (Laolongtou) is the exact point where the Great Wall meets the Bohai Sea on the coast: the eastern terminus of the entire wall. It is the only place on the Great Wall where you can stand at the wall's edge and see it descend into water, making it a unique landmark most visitors to the wall never experience.

How difficult is the hike at Jianshan?

The Jianshan hike is scenic and peaceful, suitable for all fitness levels according to the operator. Some sections of the wall have been restored to make walking easier, while other parts remain in their original state, so you encounter both preserved and untouched stone as you climb.

What makes Shanhaiguan Pass historically significant?

Shanhaiguan Pass, built in 1381 by Ming general Xu Da, was known as the "First Pass Under Heaven" and served as a critical defense against invasions from Manchuria for nearly 300 years. It protected the Ming capital and the empire's eastern frontier, and is now a National Cultural Heritage Site.

Is lunch included, and what kind of food will I eat?

Lunch is not included in the tour price, but your guide will take you to a traditional local restaurant away from tourist crowds where you can dine like a local and taste authentic regional flavors.

How is the day organized between the three sites?

You visit Shanhaiguan Pass first, then Old Dragon's Head on the coast, then travel about 3 kilometers north to Jianshan for the hike. The private vehicle and driver handle transport between stops, and the eight-hour day is paced to give you time at each location without rushing.
