The experience

The day starts with Pudacuo National Park, a 1,300-square-kilometer reserve sitting between 3,500 and 4,159 metres altitude. The park is split into three main areas (Shudu Lake, Bita Lake and Militang Pasture) connected by a 69-kilometre clockwise loop that takes four to six hours to walk. Sightseeing buses run between each section, so you move through the landscape without driving yourself. The park holds the distinction of being China's first national park to meet International Union for Conservation of Nature standards, and it sits within the Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Areas UNESCO World Heritage Site.

From there, the route heads to the White Water Terraces, a natural formation 2,380 metres up in the foothills of Haba Snow Mountain. Spring water rich in calcium bicarbonate flows downward year after year, leaving behind mineral deposits that have built terraces across three square kilometres: the largest spring terraces in China. The terraces sit backed by green hills and surrounded by blue water, creating a quiet landscape where you can see both distant mountain scenery and the water formations close up. The final major stop is Tiger Leaping Gorge, midway between Lijiang and Shangri-La, where the Jinsha River (part of the Yangtze) has carved one of the world's deepest gorges between snow-capped peaks. The gorge is known as one of the world's great treks, and the river's power is visible in the roaring water below the cliffs.

The itinerary is yours to shape. You can return to Lijiang at the end of the day, or extend into Shangri-La to visit Songzanlin Monastery (a Tibetan Buddhist complex known as the "Little Potala Palace" for its resemblance to the famous structure in Lhasa), and Dukezong Ancient City, a 1,300-year-old town of traditional Tibetan homes, temples and narrow winding lanes where you can walk the maze-like streets and browse local shops selling thangka paintings, jewelry and incense.
