The experience

Tiger Leaping Gorge is the centerpiece. Stand on the observation deck and watch the river surge through a canyon so narrow that the towering peaks on both sides reach straight up into the clouds, steep and precipitous, with the water stirring up huge waves below. From there, the drive passes Haba Snow Mountain (its main peak rises 5,396 meters above sea level), and continues to Baishui Terrace, a natural limestone formation that resembles a frozen waterfall cascading down the mountainside.

The second half of the day moves into Shangri-La itself. Dukezong Ancient Town sits amidst majestic mountains with traditional Tibetan architecture: stone houses with sloping roofs, cobblestone streets, and prayer flags fluttering in the breeze. Songzanlin Monastery, known as "the little Potala Palace," was chosen by the Dalai Lama in 1679 through divination and became the uppermost public monastery in Yunnan. It holds treasures accumulated across dynasties: golden Buddha figures, golden lamps, Tibetan texts, silver censers and other precious objects made by both Tibetan and Han craftspeople. Annually, the Gedong Festival draws pious believers who prostrate themselves at every step as they pray.
