The experience

The tour starts at your hotel lobby and heads to Sun Island, where the snow festival fills the grounds with large-scale sculptures and art installations. You have two hours to walk through them, then return for lunch at a restaurant where you order what you want: duck, hot pot, barbecue, or vegetarian dishes are all options. After lunch, there's a break of one or two hours to rest or grab coffee before the second part of the day.

At 3:30pm, your guide takes you to Harbin Ice and Snow World, the main event. You spend three hours there, which means you see the ice sculptures and installations in daylight and then stay into the evening when the structures are lit up. An ice show is arranged during your visit. If you chose the lunch-plus-dinner option, you'll have dinner around 6:30pm before heading back to your hotel. If you picked lunch only or tour only, you're dropped off after the ice world closes.

The guide speaks your language and travels with you the whole day in a private vehicle. Harbin's winter weather is serious (the operator recommends a down coat, non-slip shoes, cotton pants, gloves and a hat), but the tour is suitable for all fitness levels. Wheelchair access is available, and specialized infant seats can be arranged if you're traveling with a baby.
