One Hour Chinese Calligraphy Lesson in Yangshuo Hotel

A one-hour private calligraphy or painting lesson at your Yangshuo hotel, taught in English by a Chinese master who demonstrates technique and guides you through writing characters or brush methods used in classical painting. Your instructor brings all materials and meets you in your room or hotel lobby. Book at least one day ahead and let us know which skill you want to learn.

The experience

The instructor arrives at your hotel with ink, paper, brushes and everything else you need. You'll start by learning how to hold the brush, grind the ink and prepare the paper: the foundation before any stroke touches down. Then you move into the actual writing, working through basic techniques of Chinese characters while the instructor watches and corrects your hand position and pressure. If you choose painting instead, you'll study the brush methods classical Chinese masters use, comparing them to techniques you may already know.

One hour is enough to move past watching a demonstration and actually write characters or make brushstrokes yourself. The private setup means the pace follows your questions, not a group schedule. Your instructor speaks English, so the instruction is clear even if you've never held a brush before. If you want to paint on a fan instead of paper, that costs an extra 35 CNY and you'll arrange it when you book.
