At 10:30am your hotel pickup begins the day. A chartered vehicle takes you into Nanshan, where Baiyanggou (White Poplar Gully) sits at the foot of the Tianshan Mountains. The valley holds grassland, a waterfall, and yurts: the traditional felt tents of the region. You spend the morning moving through this landscape before heading back down toward the city.

The Erdaoqiao International Bazaar fills the afternoon. This is where Urumqi's traders stock goods from across Central Asia: dried fruits, hand-knotted carpets, silks, spices and souvenirs. You wander at your own pace, browsing the stalls without a fixed schedule or a sales pitch. The bazaar is dense and old enough to feel like a real market, not a tourist version of one.
