The experience

You're picked up from your central Beijing hotel and driven roughly 90 minutes to Mutianyu, the highest section of the Great Wall. The surrounding area is dense with forest and grassland: a different landscape from the crowded restored sections closer to the city. Once you arrive, you choose your ascent: cable car or chairlift up, then toboggan down on the return. The toboggan is a slide that runs the length of the descent, so the way down is faster than the way up. You walk the wall itself at whatever pace suits you, with no guide narration or fixed stops. The time is yours to spend.

Lunch happens at an authentic local Chinese restaurant (or a Western-style option if you prefer), where you eat what the locals eat rather than a tour-group set menu. After the meal, the driver takes you back to Beijing for a 60-minute foot massage that works acupressure points to release tension. You can extend the massage time at your own cost if you want more. The tour ends with a return to your hotel.
