Once you reach the Great Wall No. 1 parking lot, you board the shuttle that carries you to the base of the wall—a short ride that saves the steep walk up from the entrance. At the wall itself, you scan your passport to enter, then take the cable car up to Tower 14, where the views open across the Yanshan mountains and the wall stretches in both directions. Most visitors hike toward Tower 20 from there, following the restored sections of the wall at whatever pace suits you.

The cable car runs both ways, so you descend the same route and return to the parking lot by shuttle. Your driver waits and brings you back to your hotel. The whole outing runs about five hours door-to-door. Because everything is pre-arranged—entrance, cable car, shuttle, transport—you avoid the ticket lines that can stretch for hours, especially in Beijing's winter and summer extremes.
