The experience

The tour opens at Tunxi Old Street, a strip of traditional Huizhou-style shops and residences where you can walk at your own pace before checking into your hotel in Huangshan City. Day two takes you to Hongcun Village, a charming traditional settlement best known as the filming location for the Oscar-winning film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. After lunch, you drive to the Yungu Cable Car stop and ascend Mount Huangshan itself, visiting named peaks and viewpoints (Beginning to Believe Peak, Black Tiger Pine, Lion Peak, Stone Monkey Gazing at the Sea of Clouds, Cooling Terrace), and watching the sunset from Purple Cloud Peak while staying overnight on the mountain.

Day three starts early: you meet your guide in the pre-dawn hours to catch the sunrise over Huangshan, then use the new Xihai Cable Car to explore the West Sea Grand Canyon, a dramatic landscape of stone formations and sheer drops. Lunch comes with mountain views, and you descend via the Yungu Cable Car back to Huangshan City. The final day takes you to Shexian county to see the Tangyue Memorial Stone Archways: seven arches in total, three from the Ming Dynasty and four from the Qing Dynasty, each with its own historical story. You'll also explore the Bao Garden, a private garden and exhibition space housing China's largest private collection of bonsai trees. Before returning to the airport or railway station, you visit the Hu Kaiwen Chinese Ink Stick Factory to see how Anhui's famous calligraphy and painting ink sticks are produced.

Your guide is a professional art historian who speaks English throughout the tour. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided each day according to the itinerary, and bottled water is included. All accommodation is in four-star hotels, and round-trip private transfer from Huangshan airport or Huangshan North railway station is arranged for you.
