The experience

Your guide picks you up from your hotel in central Guilin or Yangshuo at 9:00 am and drives toward the mountains for roughly two and a half hours. The route takes you to Huangluo Yao Village first, where you'll spend time with the Yao people and see their cultural tradition of growing hair to lengths of a meter or more. Your guide will recommend local restaurants for lunch based on what you want to eat, and you'll eat there before moving on to the terraces themselves.

From Huangluo, you continue to Ping'an Rice Terraces, where the walking begins. The fields wind up the mountainsides in ribbons (local villagers have been farming them for more than 600 years), and you follow the mountain paths between them. The tour takes you to viewpoints with names like Seven Stars Accompanying the Moon and Nine Dragons and Five Tigers, each one offering a different angle on the terraced landscape. The walks are light and the terrain is manageable for all fitness levels, though comfortable walking shoes matter.

By around 6:00 pm, your driver brings you back to your hotel in Guilin or Yangshuo, ending the day. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and if you book the guide option, you get a local guide with English. The driver-guide option includes translation app support.
