The Experience

The tour begins with pickup at Lhasa airport or train station and a drive through the Yarlung Tsangpo and Lhasa river valleys, passing typical Tibetan villages on the way to your hotel downtown. The first day is kept light to let you acclimate to the altitude; sightseeing starts on day two.

Day two takes you to Potala Palace, the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas since the 7th century, where the gilded burial stupas of former Dalai Lamas and the meditation cave of Tibet's 33rd great king are the most valued holdings. After lunch, you move to Jokhang Temple, founded in the 7th century and housing a statue of Buddha Sakyamuni at age twelve, where you'll see pilgrims making prostrations outside. The afternoon continues around Barkhor Street, where you walk the kora with locals and pilgrims, explore the old market, and can taste Tibetan tea in a tea house before the welcome dinner.

Day three splits between Dadong Village—a protected ancient Tibetan settlement 25 kilometers southwest of Lhasa, surrounded by valleys—where you visit the 11th-century Nyimatang Monastery, take a light walk, and share lunch with a local family, and Sera Monastery in the afternoon. Sera is one of Tibet's three great Gelug monasteries, and the main draw is the monks' debate session around 3 to 5 o'clock, where you watch them argue their religious interpretations. The monastery also holds a scripture printing house, three sand mandalas, and colorful rock paintings of Buddha. On day four, you depart Lhasa by air or train; the tour operator can arrange airport or railway drop-off if needed.
