The experience
The day starts with pickup from your Xi'an hotel and a two-hour drive to Huangdi Mausoleum, the most important ancient grave site in China and the burial place of Huangdi, the tribal leader credited as the origin of Chinese civilization. Since 422 BC, emperors and dignitaries have worshipped here. Your private English-speaking guide provides context as you move through the site.
From there, the tour continues to Hukou Waterfall Scenic Area. A shuttle bus carries you the eight kilometers from the entrance to the waterfall itself, where you spend about two hours exploring. The waterfall drops from the riverbed into a deep hole, creating vast spray and mist that rises across the Yellow River. On clear days, a rainbow sometimes forms in the spray. The primitive landscape (the surging river, the scale of the water) is what stays with travelers after the drive back to Xi'an, which takes around four hours.
Bottled water and an air-conditioned vehicle are provided throughout. You arrange your own lunch at the scenic area. The return trip is timed to give you time for a quick dinner before arriving back at your hotel.
