The experience
You're picked up from your Xi'an hotel at 6:30 am and driven to the bullet train station. The 1.5-hour train ride to Luoyang is fast enough that you leave in the morning and return the same evening: no second hotel, no luggage shuffle. A local guide meets you at Luoyang Longmen station and drives you to both sites by van.
The Longmen Grottoes contain the largest and most impressive collection of Chinese stone carving from the late Northern Wei and Tang Dynasties (316–907), all devoted to Buddhist religion and representing the peak of that craft. It's one of the top three grottoes heritage sites in China. After the grottoes, you drive about an hour to Shaolin Temple, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. The Kung Fu show is the centerpiece of the temple visit and shows why Shaolin earned its reputation as "the Number One Temple under Heaven."
Your guide drops you at Luoyang Longmen railway station for the return train to Xi'an. Once you arrive back in Xi'an, you take a taxi from the station to your hotel. The whole day runs 12 to 13 hours from pickup to return, with the guide and all transport between sites included. You choose whether we book your train tickets or you arrange them yourself at checkout.
