The Experience

We’d already been in the car for maybe twenty minutes when our guide, Li, started telling us about Baiyun Mountain — White Cloud Mountain. I was still half-awake from jet lag, but the air up there really does feel different. It’s cooler than downtown, and you can hear birds instead of traffic. We took one of those little electric cars up to the peak square (Li called it “the city’s lungs,” which made sense once we saw all that green). There were locals doing tai chi and some older guys playing shuttlecock — I tried to join but completely missed the kick. They laughed and waved me over anyway.

The Temple of the Six Banyan Trees was next. It’s hard to describe how old it feels inside — incense everywhere, a haze that makes sunlight look soft around the big Buddha statues. Li explained how Buddhism came here from India ages ago. I tried to listen but got distracted by a monk’s chanting echoing off the stone walls. There’s a pagoda that leans just slightly; apparently everyone takes photos at the same angle so you can’t tell.

Lunch was at a tea house where nobody spoke English except Li, which I liked — it felt honest. We ordered way too many things (her suggestion), including these red rice rolls with shrimp that I keep thinking about even now. The tea etiquette is serious business here; I nearly poured mine wrong and got a gentle correction from an older lady at the next table who smiled but shook her head. You know you’re not home when even pouring tea is an art.

Afterwards we wandered through Xiguan Old House Community — narrow lanes with wooden sliding doors and qilou buildings that look straight out of a black-and-white movie. Some people were playing mahjong outside, slapping tiles down so hard it echoed off the walls. At Lychee Bay Park there was this group singing Cantonese opera in full costume just for fun; no stage, just benches under banyan trees. The sound drifted over the water channels and mixed with someone frying chestnuts nearby — sweet smoke everywhere.

I didn’t expect Guangzhou to be this layered: skyscrapers next to old neighborhoods, silence on Baiyun Mountain after so much city noise. Our private Guangzhou city tour felt like skipping between centuries every hour or so — not always smooth, but never boring either.
