The experience

The driver meets you at your Fenghuang hotel at 8:00am and drives two hours (123km) to Tongren Fanjing Mountain in an air-conditioned sedan or minivan. The journey itself is the commute. Once you arrive at the park, you board a shuttle bus from the tourist center to Yu'ao Station, then take a cable car to the summit area. This setup means you skip the long uphill walk and land at the high-altitude sites with energy left to explore them.

Fanjing Mountain sits at 2,570 metres above sea level as the highest peak of the Wuling Mountains and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main draw is Red Cloud Golden Summit, a thumb-like rock formation described by UNESCO as an "island of metamorphic rock in a sea of karst," formed between 2 million and 65 million years ago. Mushroom Stone, the mountain's landmark, stands on a base that has weathered rain, heat and snow for over a billion years. Old Golden Summit reaches 2,494 metres and holds a temple dedicated to Buddha Dipamkara. It is the best vantage point for panoramic photos. Cheng En Temple, built in the Ming Dynasty between the two summits, has scarlet walls and black tiles and anchors the temple complex on the mountain.

After your afternoon on the mountain, the driver returns you to Fenghuang or Tongren hotel. The full day runs eight hours from pickup to drop-off. Your guide speaks Chinese and will accompany the transfer. The mountain exploration itself is self-guided, so you set the pace at each site.
