The Experience

We almost missed our pickup because I’d set my alarm to Beijing time — classic. Our guide, Li, just grinned when we tumbled into the van, still half asleep. “No worries,” he said, “we’ll beat the crowds if we go now.” The drive out of Chongqing was longer than I thought (about three hours), but watching the city fade into misty hills felt oddly calming. Somewhere past the last toll booth, Li started telling us about how Wulong is on UNESCO’s list, right after Dazu Rock Carvings. I could smell damp earth every time we cracked a window — it’s greener out here than I expected.

The shuttle bus at Wulong Karst was packed with families and a few hikers who looked way more prepared than us. We had to buy tickets for both the park and the shuttle (Li handled it all). There’s this elevator clinging to a cliff — 108 meters straight down. My stomach did a weird flip as we dropped into the sinkhole valley. Down there, it was cool and echoey; you could hear water dripping somewhere far off. The triple bridge formations are huge — like something out of a movie (which makes sense, since they filmed Transformers here). Walking under those stone arches made me feel tiny in a good way.

I tried asking Li what “Tiankeng” really means in Mandarin and probably butchered it — he laughed and said it’s just “sky pit.” The hike itself took about two hours but didn’t feel hard unless you count my legs complaining on the stairs back up. At some point, I stopped trying to take photos and just listened to the wind moving through the trees above us. It smelled faintly of moss and something spicy from someone’s snack bag nearby.

Lunch wasn’t fancy — just roasted fish with chili and some mountain greens at a family-run hostel near the park entrance — but honestly? It hit different after that walk. Everything tasted fresh and smoky; even the rice seemed better than usual. On the ride back to Chongqing, I caught myself replaying that moment under the stone arches, thinking how small (and lucky) I felt standing there.
