The experience
Chongqing's layout defies most cities: monorails slice through skyscrapers, multi-level overpasses stack overhead, and the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers cut through valleys so deep the downtown sits at the bottom of a 3D maze. Your guide meets you for pickup and walks you through the Liberation Monument, originally built in 1945 as a victory memorial and renamed in 1950 to mark the Communist liberation. From there you move to Chaotianmen, the symbolic gateway where the two rivers converge, for centuries the primary dock for imperial officials and merchants, now ringed by futuristic towers designed by architect Moshe Safdie that resemble sailing ships.
The Chaotian Sails complex itself is a stop: eight towers up to 350 meters tall, with a 300-meter-long glass Crystal Skywalk suspended 250 meters above the river, linking four towers and offering bird's-eye views of the confluence. You'll walk through over 30,000 square meters of rooftop gardens and riverside promenades. Then comes Liziba Station, the globally famous engineering oddity where trains on Chongqing Rail Transit Line 2 pass seamlessly through the 6th to 8th floors of a 19-story residential building: the surreal centerpiece of what locals call the "8D Magic City."
The afternoon takes you to Hongya Cave, an 11-story stilt-building complex perched on a cliff above the Jialing River, blending ancient Bayu architecture with modern shops and restaurants. From there you descend to the Huguang Guild Hall on the Yangtze's banks, China's largest and best-preserved Qing-dynasty regional guildhall complex, built between 1751 and 1759 during the "Fill Sichuan" migration wave. The final stop is the Three Gorges Museum, one of China's largest thematic museums, housing over 180,000 artifacts including ancient bronzes, Han Dynasty sculptures and wartime relics spanning Chongqing's 3,000-year history. Museum and guild hall entry fees are included; metro tickets during the tour are included; food and drink are not.
