The experience

The tour begins at Liberation Monument in the heart of Jiefangbei, the city's commercial center, where your guide will frame Chongqing's dual identity as a World War II wartime capital and a modern metropolis. From there, a 20-minute walk takes you to Kuixing Tower, the architectural icon that has become famous on social media for its impossible geometry: multiple buildings and hillsides connected by skybridges that blur which floor you're actually on. This is what living in a mountainous city looks like when space is scarce: vertical, layered, and designed around movement between upper and lower levels.

After Kuixing Tower, the route passes a French church built in 1893 and rebuilt after World War II damage, then moves to lunch at a local restaurant where you'll eat Xiaomian, Chongqing's signature street noodle. The dish is small in portion but complex in flavor: more than ten spices blended into each bowl, reflecting the city's love of heat and seasoning. Your guide will choose the restaurant based on weather and conditions, and can arrange Halal or vegetarian options. One drink is included. The afternoon brings a ten-minute walk to Tongyuanmen, a surviving section of the Ming Dynasty city wall now set into a public park where locals gather, then a longer walk through old neighborhoods like Jintang Street and Consulate Alley, where you'll pass authentic local snacks and the preserved ruins of a French church that served as a relief station during the War of Resistance.

At Shancheng Lane, you'll stop at a traditional teahouse for the hands-on part of the tour: paper-cutting or calligraphy instruction, with coffee or tea included. This is not a demonstration. You make the piece yourself, working with materials and guidance from someone who knows the craft. The final stretch takes you along the lower city's main road to Shiba Ti (Eighteen Ladders), a revitalized historic district of steep stone staircases, wooden houses and narrow alleys that once connected the upper and lower city. You'll see World War II air-raid shelters built into the hillside, then walk the steps at an easy pace back toward Liberation Monument, passing Bayi Road Food Street on the way. Your guide can recommend food stops or the fastest route back to your hotel if you need it.

Is this one for you? This is a shared guided tour, so you walk with a group and a local guide who sets the pace and explains what you're seeing. Choose it if you want someone to navigate the neighborhoods, tell you the history, and handle restaurant choices, and if you're comfortable with steady walking over five to six hours with breaks. The hands-on craft workshop at the teahouse is part of the experience, not optional, so book this if you want to make something, not just watch.
