The Experience

The National Museum of China sits on the east side of Tiananmen Square, and the thing nobody tells you is that you have to get the museum visit locked in first — literally, you cannot enter the square without doing the museum first. The museum opens at 9:00 and closes at 17:00, with last entry at 16:00, and it's closed Mondays. You pick one of three time slots when you book: 9:00–11:00, 11:00–13:30, or 13:30–16:00. Show up late and they will turn you away. It sounds rigid, but that's what keeps the crowds manageable inside.

On the day you go, bring your original passport — the one you used to make the reservation — and the QR code from your ticket. You'll enter through the North Gate visitor entrance during your assigned slot. The museum itself moves through Chinese history from ancient dynasties to the present, and you can spend as long as you want inside; the time slot just controls when you arrive. Once you're done, you use the museum's QR code to get into Tiananmen Square, which sits right outside. That's the sequence: museum first, then the square. If you're Chinese or hold a Chinese ID, or if you're a resident of Taiwan, Hong Kong, or Macau, you can't book this — the museum requires those visitors to reserve directly on their own website.

One hard rule: the ticket is non-changeable and non-refundable 24 hours before your visit. So pick your date and time slot carefully. If you're traveling with kids, strollers are fine, and the whole place is wheelchair accessible. Public transport gets you there easily, and the North Gate entrance is where you need to be.
