The Experience
The morning didn’t exactly go as planned—my phone alarm never went off (jet lag, I guess), so I was still brushing my teeth when our guide, Li, called from the lobby. She laughed when I apologized for running late and said not to worry, “Beijing traffic waits for no one.” That set the tone: friendly, a bit chaotic, but somehow comforting. We started at Tiananmen Square. Even through the haze, it felt massive—people everywhere, flags snapping in the wind, that faint smell of roasted chestnuts from a nearby vendor. Li pointed out the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall and told us a story about her grandfather queuing there years ago. I liked that she mixed in those personal bits.
We walked on towards the Forbidden City. It’s only about 15 minutes on foot but honestly, it felt like entering another world—red walls stretching forever, gold roofs catching what little sun there was. Inside, Li explained how 24 emperors ruled here over nearly 600 years. I tried to picture all those lives layered on top of each other. The stone underfoot was cold and smooth; you could almost feel history pressing up through your shoes. There were crowds but also these quiet pockets—one corner garden where an old man was sketching with charcoal and barely looked up as we passed.
Lunch was simple but good—noodles with a bit of chili oil and some dumplings that steamed up my glasses. Afterward we drove out to Mutianyu Great Wall (Li said it’s less crowded than Badaling). The air changed as we got closer—crisper, almost piney. We took the chairlift up (I’m not great with heights but pretended to be brave) and suddenly we were walking along this stretch of wall snaking over green hills. My legs burned after a while but I kept stopping just to look back at how far we’d come. On the way down I chickened out of the toboggan (next time), but watching kids zip by laughing made me smile anyway.
By late afternoon we were back in the car heading toward the airport again—tired but sort of buzzing inside. There’s something about seeing so much history packed into one day trip from Beijing that sticks with you longer than you expect.
