The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the hush — not silence, but that soft, expectant quiet you get just before something unusual happens. We’d left Beijing behind early, winding north until the city haze faded and the mountains started to look almost painted. Our guide, Li, pointed out tiny villages tucked in valleys as we drove. I remember her laughing at my attempt to pronounce “Longqingxia” — she said I got closer than most foreigners, but I’m pretty sure she was being kind.

The boat ride through Longqingxia Gorge felt almost unreal. The water had this glassy green color, and every so often a breeze would lift off the river and bring the smell of wet stone and pine needles. We drifted past these jagged cliffs and little temples perched impossibly high up — Li told us about Immortal Temple and how locals still hike up there for festivals. There were other boats but it never felt crowded; mostly just echoes bouncing off rock walls. At one point, sunlight broke through the clouds and hit a patch of wildflowers along the bank — I didn’t expect to feel so calm out here.

Lunch happened at a farmer’s house nearby (I think his name was Mr. Zhao? His wife made these egg dumplings that I still think about). The food was simple but somehow perfect after the morning air — lots of vegetables, nothing fancy, just good. Afterward we headed to Guyaju Cave Dwellings. Walking up to those honeycomb cliffs felt like stepping into someone else’s dream; more than 170 caves cut straight into stone, all different shapes and sizes. Li explained how people lived here centuries ago, cooking inside those rooms with soot marks still on some ceilings. I tried to imagine winter in one of those caves — can’t say I’d last long.

We wandered around for a while, poking our heads into doorways and running hands over rough walls worn smooth by time (and probably thousands of curious tourists). It’s strange how quiet it gets when you step inside one of the bigger chambers; outside there’s birdsong or wind, but in there it’s just your own footsteps echoing back at you. On the drive back to Beijing I kept thinking about those caves clinging to the hillside — how much life they must’ve seen, how much is just gone now.
