The experience

The Huguang Guild Hall opens the day: a 1807 building that once housed merchants from Hubei and Hunan provinces, now a cultural museum with an opera stage and carved details intact. From there the walk moves into Beijing's hutong neighborhoods, the narrow lanes where courtyard homes, hidden cafes and local markets sit side by side, each turn showing how the old city still lives inside the new one.

Liulichang comes next, a historic street lined with antique shops, calligraphy scrolls, traditional paintings and rare books: the kind of place where you can stop and watch artisans at work. Then Yangmeizhu Byway, where boutique shops and art studios occupy the same alleyways as the heritage they sit in. Dashilan Street, the city's oldest commercial hub, brings street food vendors, silk shops and tea merchants into view, and the walk closes at Qianmen, the restored street just south of Tiananmen Square where Beijing's history and its present-day energy meet.
