The Experience

I’ll admit I felt a weird mix of nerves and excitement as we stepped out near Tiananmen Square. Li kept weaving stories about emperors and old scandals—some funny, some kind of sad. The light was soft that morning and the air smelled faintly smoky—incense from somewhere nearby? We wandered through halls where everything felt both grand and a little worn at the edges. Lunch after that was simple but good; noodles with a salty broth and some pickled veggies I can’t name.

The drive out to Mutianyu Great Wall took maybe an hour and a half—I dozed off for part of it. When we got there, mist hung over the hills and the wall just snaked along the ridge like something alive. I’m not sure if it was awe or just being out in all that green after Beijing’s city buzz. Climbing one of the watchtowers, I ran my hand along the stones—cold and rough—and tried to imagine soldiers standing guard centuries ago. The toboggan ride down was pure fun; I nearly lost my hat.

I keep thinking about that quiet moment on the wall—just us, a few other travelers far off, wind tugging at my jacket. You see so many photos of these places but being there is different. It sticks with you in small ways later on.
