See two UNESCO World Heritage sites without splitting them across separate trips

A 2-day private tour from Chongqing combining Wulong Karst National Park and Dazu Ancient Rock Carvings, two UNESCO sites most tour operators keep separate. Day one covers the 200km drive to Wulong's Tiankeng sinkhole, an 80-meter elevator descent, and a moderate 2-hour hike through the natural triple bridge formation. Day two starts at 8:30am for Beishan's oldest carvings, then moves to Baoding, the largest carving site in Dazu with 900-year-old Buddhist sculptures. Driver-guide, hotel pickup, bottled water and breakfast are included. Carvings entry fees and internal shuttle rides are paid on site.

The experience

Most tour companies split these two sites across separate bookings because the drive time and souvenir shop stops make a single itinerary hard to sell. This operator built the route to fit both inside 2 days by using the new highway system and skipping the retail detours. You leave your Chongqing hotel in the morning, drive 3 hours to Wulong, and spend the afternoon at Tiankeng: the primary UNESCO site. The sinkhole itself is a valley carved through three natural ridges that look like giant bridges. You take an 80-meter cliff elevator down to the floor, then hike for about 2 hours through the formation, passing the Transformer IV movie scenes. The hiking is moderate intensity.

Day two starts at 8:30am from downtown Chongqing for the 1.5-hour drive to Dazu. Beishan, the oldest carving site, sits in a pastoral forest and stays quiet because most large groups skip it: the travel agent margins don't look good and guides often aren't trained for it. You'll see twin giant Buddha statues and a 900-year-old pagoda nearby, then eat a fresh country lunch at a local village restaurant. After lunch, you move to Baoding, the largest and best-preserved carving site in Dazu, where 900-year-old Buddhist sculptures cover the cliff face. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999 and represents the peak of ancient Chinese stone sculpture. You spend about 2 hours inside with your guide. Internal shuttle buses and golf cars are mandatory for preservation. The drive back to downtown Chongqing takes 90 minutes.

Your driver-guide speaks English or Mandarin and stays with you for both days, handling the long highway stretches and the navigation between sites. Breakfast is included. Lunch on day two is a local meal you pay for separately. Entry tickets to both carving sites, the Wulong sinkhole, and the internal shuttle rides are paid on site at each location.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Chinese.

How much time do I actually spend hiking at Wulong Karst?

The hike through Tiankeng takes approximately 2 hours at moderate intensity after you descend the 80-meter cliff elevator. The rest of day one is driving: 3 hours to get there from Chongqing, then 3 hours back.

Can I see both Beishan and Baoding carvings on day two, or do I have to choose one?

You can visit both. Beishan is included in the tour. Baoding is the main stop. If you want to explore more carvings at Beishan after lunch, you can purchase a combined ticket covering both sites for 150 yuan per adult, and your guide's service for that extra time is free.

What's the difference between Beishan and Baoding carvings?

Beishan is the oldest carving site in Dazu, hidden in a pastoral forest and rarely crowded. Baoding is the largest site and the most famous. It's the best-preserved collection of 900-year-old Buddhist sculptures in southern China and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999.

Does the price include entry to the carvings and the Wulong sinkhole?

No. The tour includes your driver-guide, hotel pickup, breakfast and transportation between sites. You pay entry fees to Wulong Karst, Beishan and Baoding carvings, plus internal shuttle and golf car rides at Baoding, when you arrive at each location.

What if I don't have a car or I'm staying in a different part of Chongqing?

Hotel pickup is included. Your driver-guide collects you from your hotel in downtown Chongqing on both mornings and returns you to your hotel or any specified location downtown at the end of each day.
