The Experience

“You’re going to need these,” said Diego, grinning as he handed me a pair of crampons that looked way more serious than I felt. There was this early morning chill in Pucón, but Diego and the other guides moved around like it was just another Tuesday. We piled into the van with our boots and gear rattling around, everyone sort of quiet except for one Chilean guy making jokes about his breakfast sitting heavy. The drive up to Villarrica Volcano was longer than I expected—about an hour or so?—but watching the volcano get bigger through the window made it feel like something was about to happen. I kept sniffing the air for sulfur but mostly just smelled wet earth and cold metal from my gloves.

The first stretch is almost gentle—walking with poles, chatting, trying not to look up too much because that summit is... well, it’s far. Our guide pointed out old lava flows and told us how Villarrica is one of South America’s most active volcanoes (I googled later: 2,847 meters). When we hit the snow line, everything changed. Suddenly it’s crampons on, ice axe in hand, and every step feels deliberate. The wind picked up and I could hear nothing but boots crunching and someone humming behind me (never figured out who). There’s this weird mix of nerves and calm—I guess that’s what happens when you’re halfway up a volcano with strangers who start feeling like teammates.

The last push before the crater was tough—I’m not gonna lie. My legs burned and my face stung from windblown ice crystals. But then we were standing at the edge looking into the fumarole—smoke drifting up, smelling sharp and almost sweet? One of the guides said if you’re lucky you can see magma inside. We weren’t that lucky but honestly I didn’t care; just seeing all those lakes scattered below made me want to laugh out loud (so I did). Going down was pure fun—sliding on little snow toboggans while shouting nonsense in Spanish. My gloves got soaked but I didn’t mind at all.
