Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Valley of the Moon

  • Walk trail to Dune Mayor
  • Visit viewpoints including Quebrada Honda
  • Observe natural formations Los Tres Vigilantes
  • Watch sunset at designated spot

The experience

How do you see the Atacama's most famous geological formation without renting a car or joining a group? A private guide picks you up from your hotel and drives you straight into Valle de la Luna, the desert valley that earned its name from the otherworldly rock and sand formations scattered across it. The tour runs four hours, built around the sunset: the moment when the light turns the landscape shades of orange and red that photographs alone cannot capture. You walk at a moderate pace across the valley floor, stopping at viewpoints and natural features the guide explains as you move.

The route takes you to Dune Mayor, a massive sand formation you climb for the full view of the valley, then to Las Tres Marías, the three-peaked rock formation your ancestors called Los Tres Vigilantes. From there you head to Quebrada Honda, a ravine where the Piedra del Coyote (also known as the Mirador de Ckari) sits as a natural overlook. The guide speaks Spanish and English, so you get the geological story in your language as you walk. The whole valley sits inside the Los Flamencos National Reserve, declared a Nature Sanctuary in 1982.

Your hotel pickup and drop-off are included, and the guide handles the route. One thing to know: the park entrance ticket costs extra and must be bought before your tour date through a link the operator sends on your voucher. The ticket is not included in the tour price.
