The experience

The tour starts at your hotel or Plaza de Armas and moves through the parts of Puerto Montt that shift the mood of the place. You'll see the Cathedral and the monument to German settlers in the main square, then drive to Pelluco to visit the lighthouse and look back at the city from the height. The Chamiza Bridge connects you to the Southern Road. Along the way you pass the 19th-century school that anchors the region's oldest education, and you stop at Up's house (the one that inspired the Pixar film), where the resemblance to the movie still draws attention and conversation.

The route takes in a little-known viewpoint over Reloncaví Bay and the islands beyond, then moves through the German neighborhood where 19th-century houses still stand as evidence of the European settlers who shaped the city. The most famous viewpoint opens onto the city, the ocean and the volcanoes nearby. Chinquihue Stadium sits on high ground and carries the energy of the local club's fans. Angelmo Market rounds out the stops with fresh produce, fish, seafood and handmade crafts that define the working waterfront. The guide speaks Spanish as the default language. English translation is available if you arrange it ahead of time.

You return to your starting point (hotel or plaza, your choice) with three sealed bottles of water included and the sense of how the city actually moves, without the rush.
