The experience

Isla Negra is where Neruda built one of his most eccentric homes, filled with his collections of ship figureheads, bottles and oddities gathered from around the world. The tour starts with hotel pickup in Valparaíso or Viña del Mar, then heads south along the coast to Algarrobo before reaching the house itself. You spend about an hour and a half inside, moving through the rooms as your guide explains how Neruda lived and worked there, and what each strange object meant to him.

After Isla Negra, lunch happens at a typical restaurant in Valparaíso's port (empanadas and juice), before the tour doubles back to La Sebastiana, Neruda's vertical house built into Bellavista hill in the city. This one takes another hour and a half to explore. It is narrower and taller than Isla Negra, climbing up the hillside in unexpected ways. From there, the guide takes you through Valparaíso's Concepción and Alegre hills and Sotomayor square, then finishes in Viña del Mar at the famous flower clock before returning you to your hotel. The whole day runs seven to eight hours.

Your guide speaks English, Spanish or Portuguese and stays with the group throughout. The vehicle is private, so the pace and the stops are yours alone: no waiting for other groups, no fixed rhythm except the museums' opening hours. Hotel pickup and drop-off, transport, entry to both houses, lunch and local taxes are all included.
