Three Andes landmarks in one morning: a glacial lake, a ski resort, and a working vineyard

A full-day tour of the Aconcagua Valley visits Laguna del Inca, a high-altitude lake in the Andes at 2,500 meters, then Portillo Ski Center, one of South America's major ski resorts, and finishes at Viña San Esteban for a vineyard tour and tasting of three wines. An air-conditioned vehicle carries the group through all three stops, with a live guide narrating in English, Spanish or Portuguese.

Step-by-step itinerary

Visit Laguna del Inca, Portillo, and Viña San Esteban

  • Visit Laguna del Inca
  • Explore Portillo Ski Center
  • Tour Viña San Esteban vineyard
  • Taste 3 wines at Viña San Esteban

The experience

Laguna del Inca sits at 2,500 meters in the Andes Mountains, and the tour opens there: a high-altitude lake with a documented history that shapes how you see the landscape. From the lake, the route moves to Portillo, one of South America's most established ski centers, where you walk the grounds and get a sense of the resort's scale and setting even outside the snow season. The day then descends into wine country.

Viña San Esteban is where the tour slows down. You walk the vineyard itself for about an hour and twenty minutes, then taste three wines in the tasting room. The winery sits in the same valley, so the shift from alpine terrain to grapevines happens gradually as the vehicle descends. An air-conditioned vehicle moves the group between all three stops, and a guide who speaks English, Spanish or Portuguese travels with you and explains what you're seeing at each site.

The full day runs nine hours from pickup to return. Lunch is not part of the itinerary, so plan accordingly if you're sensitive to long stretches without food. Children from age one are welcome, and the tour suits all fitness levels, though the high altitude at Laguna del Inca may affect some travelers.

What is Laguna del Inca and why is it at such a high altitude?

Laguna del Inca is a glacial lake located at 2,500 meters in the Andes Mountains, formed by snowmelt and ice in the high peaks. The altitude is what makes it a destination: the lake sits in the alpine zone where few people venture, and the thin air and stark landscape are part of what draws visitors to see it.

How much time do you spend at Viña San Esteban, and what exactly happens during the wine tasting?

Viña San Esteban takes up about an hour and twenty minutes of the day. You walk through the vineyard first, then move to the tasting room where you sample three wines from the winery's production. The guide explains the wines and the vineyard's operations during the tour.

Is Portillo Ski Center open to visitors who don't ski, and what will I see there?

Portillo welcomes visitors year-round. You walk the resort grounds and see the facilities and mountain setting that make it one of South America's major ski destinations. The visit gives you a sense of the resort's scale and location in the Andes, even if you're not skiing.

Does the tour include lunch, and are there places to eat along the route?

Lunch is not included in the tour itinerary. Plan to bring snacks or eat before departure, or ask the guide about dining options near Portillo or Viña San Esteban when you arrive.
