Three hours paddling from the river's mouth to where the water runs still and clear

Kayak the Petrohue River in Chile's South with a small group of two to six people, guided by a local in Spanish. You paddle from the estuary of the Reloncaví upstream through reed-lined arms of water to the Viguerias, where the river widens and calms. The route includes life jackets, water slippers and a kayak. A snack with local products waits at the end.

The experience

The paddle starts at the river's mouth where it meets the Estuary of the Reloncaví, in channels bordered by reeds and native vegetation. You move upstream through narrow arms of water, then into the main flow of the Petrohue River itself, heading toward the Viguerias: a destination most visitors to the region never reach. The operator has private access to this stretch and keeps the impact minimal: kayaks move in near silence, respecting the space and the local wildlife. A Spanish-speaking guide who knows the river leads the way.

Along the route you watch for herons, kingfishers, gulls and other birds that live in the reed beds and forest edges. The water stays calm and clear. When you reach the Viguerias, you stop to photograph the landscape and the view of Osorno volcano in the distance. If the water temperature suits you, you can leave the kayak and swim in the warm river before paddling back. The return follows the same reed-lined channels, this time with the sound of birds and the soft movement of the water as your company.

Back at the start, a snack of local and seasonal products (craft beer, craft sweets and regional foods) waits for you. The whole outing runs about three hours. Groups stay small, between two and six people, so the guide can adjust the pace and stop when someone wants to linger or explore.
