Four waterfalls, a volcanic cavern, a mountain hotel, and the Mocho Choshuenco Volcano in one day

This 13-hour tour from Valdivia travels into the Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve, a UNESCO Biosphere Heritage site, with a certified guide leading walks through four portals of the reserve to reach Huilo Huilo, Llallalca and Leona waterfalls, the Hotel Montaña Mágica, a volcanic cavern, and a volcano museum. Lunch in Neltume is included. The route follows the Calle-Calle river through Antilhue and Los Lagos, with a stop in Panguipulli for bathrooms and views of the lake and volcanoes. A certified guide in English or Spanish accompanies all walks and shares stories about the Valdivian Forest flora and fauna.

Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Huilo Huilo Reserve and surroundings

  • Stop in Panguipulli for walk and sights
  • Guided walk visiting four portals
  • Lunch in Neltume with volcano view
  • Stop in Puerto Fuy for lake observation and snack

The experience

Thirteen hours is a full day, and the tour uses it to move through the reserve methodically rather than rush. You start by driving the Calle-Calle river route through Antilhue and Los Lagos toward Panguipulli, where there is time to use facilities, walk the waterfront, and see the lake and birds. From there the route climbs toward Neltume, where lunch happens midday and the Mocho Choshuenco Volcano is visible across the valley.

The certified guide walks with you through four separate portals within the reserve, each one opening onto a different part of the landscape. The Cavern Portal leads to a volcanic cavern and Llallalca Falls; the Huilo Huilo Portal reaches the waterfall of the same name; the Leona Portal brings you to the Hotel Montaña Mágica and Salto La Leona; and the Deer Portal shows the wild boar and red deer breeding grounds alongside the Volcano Museum. The guide shares stories about the Valdivian Forest as you move between them, so the landscape becomes legible rather than just scenery. A stop in Puerto Fuy at the end of the day offers views of the lake and a chance to rest before the drive back to Valdivia.

The tour includes entry to all four portals, an air-conditioned vehicle for the full route, and lunch. You will need a moderate level of physical fitness for the walks, and the day involves a lot of time on your feet moving between sites. Pickup from your Valdivia hotel is included.

Is this one for you? This tour works best for travelers who can spend a full day on their feet with moderate activity, since the 13 hours involve four separate walks through different parts of the reserve. Small groups travel together with one guide, so you move at a shared pace and hear the same stories about the forest and landscape. If you prefer to explore at your own speed or need a private guide, this shared format may not suit you.
