The experience

The journey starts with a 10-minute drive from your Punta Arenas hotel to the ferry terminal, then a 1 hour 45 minute crossing of the Strait of Magellan. The ferry itself is part of the route: you'll watch sea birds and, if conditions align, dolphins crossing the same waters Ferdinand Magellan sailed in 1520. On the return leg, you take a shorter ferry with views of the Atlantic, and stop at Estancia San Gregorio, a historic sheep ranch that shaped Patagonian economy, for photographs and context on how the region developed.

The core of the tour centers on Lago Deseado lodge, where you spend two full days choosing from guided options. You can fish for rainbow and brown trout in the lake itself; hike through the woods to a waterfall; drive through the Cordillera to spot guanacos and visit lakes in different colors; or head to Caleta Maria in the Almirantazgo Sound, where an optional boat tour reaches elephant seal colonies. A third day option takes you to Lake Fagnano, the Rassmussen area, and Parque Karunkinka natural reserve for wildlife photography, or to three glaciers and another seal colony by boat. Both are full-day excursions you arrange with your guide. The King Penguin Reserve can fit on either the arrival or return day depending on your preference. More than a hundred birds inhabit their natural habitat year-round, and your guide leads you to designated lookout points to avoid disturbing nesting birds and eggs.

Private transportation and a live guide in English, Spanish, Italian, French or Portuguese are included throughout. Snacks and bottled water come each day. The return to Punta Arenas happens on day four, routing through Cerro Sombrero, a small oil-industry settlement, before the final ferry crossing. An option to fly back instead of taking the ferry is available at additional cost.

Is this one for you? This tour is built for naturalists, birders, hikers and photographers who want to move at their own pace within a structured itinerary.
