Climb to 3,776 meters and wake at the summit surrounded by 15 volcanoes

The experience

You start at the agency in Pucón early in the morning, where the guides fit you with crampons, ice axes, poles and a helmet. The drive to Villarrica National Park's Puesco-Lanin sector takes you to the trailhead, and from there the ascent begins through forest and open terrain toward the mountain camp. The first day is a long climb to 2,900 meters, where you'll sleep in a tent on the mountainside.

Day two starts before dawn. From camp you climb the final stretch to the summit at 3,776 meters, the highest volcano in the Araucanía region. The 360-degree view from the top sweeps across 15 volcanoes and several lakes. The entire descent and return to Pucón happens the same day, so you're back in town by evening.

The terrain changes as you climb: forests give way to rocky ground and then to snow and ice, which is why the crampons and ice axes matter. The Chilean side of Lanin sees few climbers, so the mountain stays quiet and the experience feels remote. The overnight camp in the middle of the mountain is part of the climb itself, not a break from it.

What's the physical fitness level needed for the Lanin Volcano climb?

Lanin requires a high level of physical fitness. The ascent to 2,900 meters on day one is long and tiring, and the final push to the 3,776-meter summit happens at dawn on day two. The climb is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy.

What gear do I need to bring myself, and what's provided?

The tour provides mountain shoes, leggings, pants, jacket, backpack, gloves, crampons, ice axes, poles, helmet, tent and mat. You need to bring your own sleeping bag, personal clothing layers, and any snacks or walking rations you prefer.

How many people climb together on this tour?

Groups stay small on the Lanin ascent, so you won't encounter crowds on the mountain. The Chilean side of the volcano is not heavily promoted, which keeps the experience quiet and remote.

Does the price include the national park entrance and insurance?

Park entrance and accident insurance are both included in the tour price. Private transportation from Pucón to the trailhead and back is also covered.
