Step-by-step itinerary
Starfish and mangrove exploration
- Ride through North Sound waters
- Visit Starfish Point and interact with starfish
- Explore mangrove sanctuary and observe wildlife
- Enjoy local beer and picnic snacks
The experience
The boat leaves from your meeting point and heads into North Sound's calm waters toward Starfish Point, where the water stays 2 to 3 feet deep. You'll wade in to find Red Cushion and West Indian starfish on the sandy bottom, handling them directly in the crystalline water. This is not a viewing platform or a tank. You're in their habitat, touching the animals themselves.
After Starfish Point, the tour moves into the mangrove sanctuary. Your guide explains the ecological role of the mangroves and points out native wildlife as the boat glides through. You'll have a chance to ask questions and take photographs. Local beer, juice and picnic snacks come with the tour, eaten aboard while you're still on the water.
The whole outing runs two to three hours from start to drop-off. You'll need to board a moving boat with some stairs, bending your knees as you step aboard. A life vest is provided and worn throughout. The tour runs daily except Good Friday, Christmas Day and New Year's Day, and requires a minimum of six passengers per departure.
