The experience

You're picked up from your hotel and driven across Sal in a private vehicle with air conditioning. The route threads through the island's working landscape: Santa Maria Salt Flats, a 69-hectare protected area that shipped 30,000 tons of salt annually; the fishing village of Palmeira by its active port, where you can watch daily life unfold or grab lunch by the water; and Espargos, the island's capital, where a viewpoint at the highest point opens onto most of the island if visibility allows. A local guide travels with you, fluent in your language, and shares stories and local knowledge at each stop.

The tour's centerpiece is Pedra de Lume Salt Crater, an ancient volcanic crater where seawater seeps in and evaporates, leaving salt behind. You can float in the high-salinity water (the density keeps you buoyant without effort), or walk the crater's rim and beach. Olho Azul (the Blue Eye) sits nearby, a cave with a hole opening to the sea from inside. On calm days and with guide approval, you can wade in and explore the "love cave" the locals call it. Tubarões Bay, known locally as Baia de Parda, is where small lemon sharks gather in shallow water. You can rent shoes for a few euros to wade in safely, or bring your own and listen to a local guide's account of the bay.

Terra Boa, about 4 km north of Espargos, is a flat, open landscape that once held vegetation and now reads as a mini-desert: the kind of place that shifts how the island feels. The tour also passes through a small private development on the west coast, halfway down the island's main highway. Lunch breaks at either Palmeira port or a city restaurant, depending on what you prefer. The whole day moves at a pace set by your group size and interests, not a fixed schedule pushing you through.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What's the Pedra de Lume Salt Crater actually like when you get there?

Pedra de Lume is an ancient volcanic crater by the sea where salt pans sit inside the crater itself. Seawater filters in through the rock and evaporates, leaving salt behind. The high salt concentration in the water is dense enough that you float without sinking, and you can swim or wade in the water if you choose to.

Can I swim or wade at the other stops, or is it just looking?

At Olho Azul, you can get your feet wet in the cave opening on calm days with your guide's approval. At Tubarões Bay, you can wade into the shallow water to see the small lemon sharks. You rent shoes for 3 euros or bring your own. Other stops like the salt flats, viewpoint and villages are for walking and observing.

How does lunch work on this tour?

You choose where to stop: either Palmeira port, where you eat by the sea and watch the fishing village, or one of the restaurants in Espargos. The tour pauses for lunch at whichever you prefer, and the meal itself is not included in the tour price.

How many people can book this tour together?

You choose your group size at checkout: 1 to 2 people, 3 to 4, 5 to 6, 7 to 8, or 9 to 12 participants. Each group gets its own private vehicle and guide for the day.
