What’s included

Your day includes hotel pickup and drop-off from Santa Maria or nearby areas plus guidance from a professional local who knows every corner of Sal Island—even those little food stalls in Palmeira where we stopped for fresh fruit along the way. All local taxes and handling charges are taken care of so you can just focus on soaking up every moment (and maybe braving those sharks).

The day didn’t start as planned—my sunglasses snapped right before we left Santa Maria. Our guide, Paulo, just grinned and said the Cape Verde sun is “good for the soul.” Not sure about my eyes, but I liked his attitude. We piled into the van (windows down, warm wind everywhere) and headed out of town. First stop was Murdeira bay—Paulo pointed out where turtles come in summer. The water looked so calm you could almost forget it’s the Atlantic. There was this weird hush over everything except for some kids laughing near the shore.

Palmeira was next—a fishing village with houses painted in colors I’d never put together but somehow they work here. A woman selling fruit waved at us; Paulo bought us each a slice of papaya that tasted way better than anything from home. He told us how Palmeira’s port keeps the island connected to the rest of Cape Verde. I tried to say thank you in Creole but just got a laugh—apparently I need more practice.

Burracona’s natural swimming pools were wild—waves smashing against black rocks, then suddenly this clear blue hole where people swim if they’re brave (I wasn’t). The air smelled salty and sharp. We saw the “Blue Eye” effect when sunlight hit just right—it looked unreal for a second, like someone dropped neon paint into the ocean. After that we drove through Terra Boa and watched Paulo pour water on the ground to show us the mirage—honestly, it messed with my head a bit.

The shark experience was last—I’ll admit my heart thumped when we waded in and saw fins slicing through shallow water. Paulo said they’re lemon sharks and not dangerous but still… standing there with them so close was something else. My feet tingled from cold water and nerves both. On the way back to Santa Maria, sand stuck between my toes and I kept thinking about how different Sal feels from anywhere else I’ve been. Can’t really explain it fully—you have to go.
