The experience

The walk begins at Alexandre Albuquerque Square, the city's main square with its central water fountain, where you meet your guide. From there you move into the Plateau, the historical heart of Praia, passing the Jaime Mota Military Barracks and the Presidential Palace as your guide explains the city's settlement history and colonial past. The route is built around what locals encounter daily: the Municipal Market (closed Sundays), where you see fresh organic fruits and vegetables alongside residents doing their shopping.

You'll stop at the Diogo Gomes monument to learn how the island was discovered, then head to Cape Verde's largest souvenir market, where the tour ends. Your guide helps you get back to your accommodation from there. Tasting local organic fruits at the market is at your own expense, as are any souvenirs you choose to buy.
