The experience

The tour starts in the Plateau, Praia's city center, where you walk the main streets and see the colonial buildings that shaped the capital: the Military Barracks built in the 18th century to defend against pirate attacks, the Presidential Palace, the central square, and the City Hall. A professional guide walks you through the architecture and tells the history of each site and the people who built them. You'll also visit the main Catholic Church, which brings medieval architecture and the country's faith together in one structure.

The market stop is the heart of the tour: the most African market in the city, known for its colorful fruits, vegetables, African clothes and constant flow of pedestrians. It's where locals shop and where you can pick up souvenirs. From there, you move to the statue of the official who discovered the island, which sits at a viewpoint overlooking Gamboa Beach and the city below. The central square, built during the colonial period, anchors the final part of the walk before the tour ends.

All fees, taxes and liability insurance are included, and the guide is a professional who speaks English, Portuguese or French. Children from age 3 are welcome. You'll need your own transport to the meeting point. The tour itself is walking only and takes two hours total.
