The experience
The day starts at the salt mines of Santa Maria, where you'll see how salt extraction shaped the island's economy for centuries. From there the 4x4 heads to Kite Beach, where the wind and the colorful kites overhead make it one of the world's top spots for the sport. You can watch or try it yourself. The route then swings through Murdeira Village, a quiet coastal settlement built around a coral reef where snorkeling puts you face-to-face with the fish and the reef itself.
The afternoon takes you to Lion Beach, an untouched stretch of sand where few travelers venture, then to a panoramic overlook of the coastline before dropping into Palmeira, a working fishing village where the boats in the harbor and the locals' welcome give you a real sense of island life. Lunch happens at a local restaurant serving Cape Verdean food: the cuisine here blends West African, Portuguese and European influences. After eating, the tour moves to Parda Reef, known locally as Shark Bay for its lemon shark nursery, and finishes at Pedra de Lume, the historic salt lake where the water's buoyancy lets you float without effort, or you can stay on the crater rim and photograph the salt flats that tell the story of Sal's salt industry.
The 4x4 is air-conditioned and seats your group only: no strangers added to the van. A live guide fluent in English, Spanish, Portuguese or French travels with you the whole day and knows the stops, the history and the people. Pickup from your hotel or accommodation is included, and the itinerary can be adjusted to match what matters most to you.
