Step-by-step itinerary

Explore West Coast wildlife and beaches

  • Pick up at 8am
  • Drive through mountain passes and canyons
  • Visit Jurassic Grove ancient cedar trees
  • Lunch break at local cafe
  • Explore Sandcut Beach and waterfall
  • Observe harbour seals and wildlife at beach

The experience

The drive itself is part of the tour: a winding route through mountain passes and river canyons that sets the tone before you arrive. Once at Jurassic Grove, you walk into a stand of Western Red Cedars that are 1000 years old, some reaching 90 meters tall and over 3 meters wide. The guide leads you through this backcountry trail as the only operator on the island offering access to this particular grove. The ancient rainforest canopy and the scale of the trees make the hike feel like stepping back in time.

After the grove, you stop for lunch at a local cafe with bathroom access and wifi, then head to the beaches. Sandcut Beach has a double-header waterfall you can walk behind, and at low tide the rocks open up into tide pools with oversized mussels and anemones. The second beach stop (either Mystic Beach or Muir Creek Beach depending on your group's ability) is where you eat lunch while harbour seals bask on the rocks offshore. If conditions align, you might see otters in the kelp forest, a bald eagle's nest in the trees, or whales crossing the strait. The sandstone cliffs and million-year-old fossils are visible in the rock face.

Transport, lunch, snacks and drinks are included. The tour runs 6.5 hours total and requires moderate fitness for the forest sections. It's not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health. Solo travelers should contact the operator directly about joining a group departure.

What are the 1000-year-old trees at Jurassic Grove actually like to see in person?

The Western Red Cedars at Jurassic Grove are massive old-growth trees, some 90 meters tall and over 3 meters wide, standing in an ancient rainforest that feels unchanged for centuries. The guide leads you through the backcountry trail safely and explains the grove's ecology. This is the only operator on Vancouver Island offering access to this specific site.

Harbour seals regularly bask on the rocks at the beach lunch stops, and otters sometimes appear in the kelp forest nearby. Bald eagles nest in the trees above the beaches, and whales crossing the strait are possible depending on the season and conditions. The tour also passes through habitats where sea lions and other coastal wildlife live, though sightings are not guaranteed.
