Landscape Photography & Hiking in Deep Cove: Learn from a 20+ year expert
Learn landscape photography while hiking through old-growth forest and waterfalls
Landscape photography and intermediate hiking in Deep Cove combines a guided 4-hour hike through old-growth forests, waterfalls and ocean lookouts with instruction in photography fundamentals, taught by a guide with 20+ years of hiking experience. Transportation from your accommodation, hiking poles (optional to borrow) and complimentary photos are included. Beginners to intermediate hikers welcome; a good level of fitness is required for the steep climbs and stairs on Quarry Rock.
The Experience
The hike starts from your accommodation with return transportation included, so you skip the logistics of getting to the trailhead. You'll spend the morning or afternoon on Quarry Rock, a popular beginner hike in Deep Cove that climbs through old-growth forest, passes waterfalls and reaches ocean lookouts and viewpoints. The steep sections and stairs mean you need solid fitness, but the guide adjusts the pace to your level and can lend hiking poles if you want them.
The photography instruction runs alongside the hike itself—you're not stopping for a lesson and then hiking, but learning as you walk. The guide teaches landscape photography basics whether you're carrying a smartphone or a DSLR, so you don't need to own a camera or have shot before. By the end of the hike you'll have photos the guide took of you and the landscape, plus the techniques to frame your own shots on future hikes.

What's the Quarry Rock hike actually like?

Do I need to bring my own camera?
No. The guide teaches landscape photography on smartphones and DSLRs equally, so bring whatever you have or borrow a DSLR camera from the guide if you prefer. Hiking poles are also available to borrow if you want them.
How does the photography instruction work during the hike?
The guide teaches landscape photography basics as you walk, pointing out composition, light and framing at the viewpoints and scenic stops along Quarry Rock. You'll learn techniques you can use on future hikes, and the guide provides complimentary photos taken during the day.
What time does the hike start?
The guide picks you up from your accommodation and returns you there at the end, so the start time is arranged with your location. The hike itself takes 4 hours once you're on the trail.
Is this hike suitable for someone who's never hiked before?
Quarry Rock is labeled a beginner hike, but it has steep climbs and stairs that require a good level of fitness. If you're new to hiking but fit, the guide can adjust the pace to your level. Travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health or pregnancy are not recommended for this hike.
