Paddle through hidden lagoons and learn what locals know about the islands

A small-group kayaking eco tour through the Toronto Islands lagoons with an experienced guide, kayaks and personal flotation devices included. The guide adjusts the pace and teaching to the group's skill level, covering island history, ecology, local wildlife and paddling technique over two hours. Minimum age is 12; the ability to swim short distances is required. Ferry tickets to the islands are booked separately.

The Experience

You paddle through the lagoons of the Toronto Islands—the only island chain in Western Lake Ontario—with an experienced guide leading a small group. The guide teaches paddling technique, island history dating back to the first Native American settlements, and the ecology and wildlife you're moving through. No kayaking experience is necessary; the guide adjusts the lesson and pace to whoever shows up that day, and a brief introduction covers the basics before you leave the shore.

The two-hour tour stays in the lagoons where the islands create sheltered water, letting you see the spots locals know about instead of the main harbour. Wards and Algonquin Island, some of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city, still hold ancestors of the original inhabitants. The guide explains the history as you paddle—how Toronto, then called York, was chosen as a settlement because the Toronto Island created a prime natural harbour. All kayaks, paddles and personal flotation devices are provided.

Tours run with a minimum of two people; if enrollment doesn't reach two by 24 hours before the start time, the tour is cancelled. Service animals are allowed. Public transportation options are available near the departure point, and the two-hour duration includes travel time from the start to each leg of the route and back.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want to paddle rather than watch—you're operating the kayak the whole time, not sitting in a boat while someone else navigates. The small-group size and guide's willingness to adjust the pace means you get instruction matched to your actual skill level, not a one-size-fits-all lesson.
