Squamish Via Ferrata: Climbing with Fixed Cables
Grab rungs, cross bridges, stay clipped to the rock
Squamish via ferrata is a guided climbing adventure using fixed metal rungs, suspension bridges and safety cables—no prior climbing experience needed. You climb for 1.5 hours with a professional guide in a small group, wearing a helmet and harness. Children from age 8 are welcome; Sea to Sky Gondola lift tickets are required and purchased separately.
The Experience
You start by stepping onto ladder-like metal rungs bolted into the rock face, each one solid underfoot. A fixed cable runs above, and you clip your harness to it—the safety system means you're never unattached. The route crosses exhilarating suspension bridges that sway slightly as you move, then returns to more rungs and traverses. The whole thing takes 90 minutes, and the views open up as you climb: ocean fjords and snowy peaks visible from the rock. A professional guide leads the group of no more than a handful of people, showing you where to place your hands and feet, and the pace stays manageable—this is climbing made accessible, not a race.
What makes this different from a hike is the vertical: you're using your arms and legs to move up the rock face, not just walking uphill. The metal rungs and bridges do the heavy work, but your body feels the effort. The guide handles all the technical setup—harness fitting, cable checks, route decisions—so you focus on the movement and the view. Bring hiking boots or running shoes (no sandals), sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, water and snacks; an all-weather jacket and light gloves help if the top of the gondola is cooler than the base. A camera on a leash lets you capture the moment without dropping it.
The experience is suitable for ages 8 and up, and families often book this together. Younger children can join on private tours arranged separately. You'll need at least a moderate level of physical fitness to handle the climbing and the exposure, but the fixed cables and small-group pacing mean you're never in over your head. Sea to Sky Gondola tickets are not included in the price and must be purchased on your own—buy them online or at the ticket window when you arrive.

What's the difference between via ferrata and regular rock climbing?
Via ferrata uses fixed metal rungs, bridges and a safety cable bolted into the rock, so you're climbing an assisted route rather than free-climbing. You clip your harness to the cable and step on the rungs; the metal does most of the work, and you focus on movement and balance instead of finding handholds.
Do I need climbing experience to do the Squamish via ferrata?
No—this is designed for non-climbers and families. The fixed rungs and cable system handle the technical part, and the guide leads you through the route. You just need moderate fitness and the willingness to climb vertically for 90 minutes.
What happens if my child is younger than 8?
Children under 8 can join on private tours only, which you can arrange separately. The standard group tour is for ages 8 and up.
Are Sea to Sky Gondola tickets included?
No—gondola tickets are purchased separately, either online or at the ticket window. The via ferrata price covers the guide, harness, helmet and the climbing experience only.
How long does the whole experience take?
The climbing itself is 1.5 hours. Add time for harness fitting, safety briefing and the gondola ride up and down, so plan for a longer block of time at the site.
What should I wear and bring?
Wear hiking boots or running shoes (no sandals), an all-weather jacket and light gloves. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, water, snacks and a camera on a leash. Dress for cooler weather at the top of the gondola than at the base.
