The Experience

I didn’t expect my daughter to laugh so much at the squishy wetsuit — honestly, I was worried she’d be cold or scared. But right away in Squamish, our guide (I think his name was Mark?) handed her a helmet and cracked a joke about “river hair” that broke the ice. The Cheakamus River looked calm at first, kind of milky blue under the morning clouds. We’d come down from Whistler on the shuttle — early, but worth it since no one had to drive or argue about directions.

The first splash caught me off guard — not wild, just enough to wake you up. The water smelled like pine needles and something sharp, almost metallic. My son kept pointing out driftwood and trying to guess which birds were which; Mark knew them all, even the tiny ones I barely noticed. There were moments when it got quiet except for paddles tapping the raft and distant laughter from another boat. It’s funny how you notice your own heartbeat in those pauses.

We stopped for a snack halfway through — nothing fancy, just cookies and juice on a big flat rock by the riverbank. Somehow it tasted better than anything we’d packed ourselves (maybe because my hands were still shaking a little). A couple of other families were there too; one dad slipped on a pebble and everyone laughed, including him. The ride back felt slower, maybe because we didn’t want it to end yet. I still think about that stretch where the sun finally came out and everything went gold for a minute.
