Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Nova Scotia's South Shore
- Visit Peggy's Cove Lighthouse
- Explore BernArt Maze or alternate gem
- Discover Lunenburg town and harbor
- Tour Ovens Sea Caves or alternate gem
The experience
The granite boulders and lighthouse at Peggy's Cove anchor the day. You get free time to walk the rocks, photograph the Atlantic, and move through the fishing village at your own pace. The guide does not narrate a fixed route, but drops you and returns at an agreed time. Lunenburg comes next, a UNESCO World Heritage town where Victorian storefronts line the harbor and the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic sits ready if you want it. Again, the time is yours: some travelers eat fresh seafood at a waterfront table, others browse the galleries and craft shops, and the guide waits.
The two hidden gems rotate by season and availability. BernArt Maze runs mid-June to mid-October on weekdays and weekends, a winding art installation where you navigate pathways among Nova Scotian sculptures. Ovens Sea Caves opens mid-May to mid-October, and you descend into sea-carved rock chambers to hear the water echo inside ancient stone. If either is closed, the guide takes you to Mahone Bay or Blue Rocks instead. Both are coastal stops the operator names as fallbacks. The minivan seats up to five, so the group stays small enough that the guide feels like someone exploring with friends rather than leading a crowd.
Hotel pickup is included and the vehicle is air-conditioned. The remaining time beyond the four stops goes to driving between them. A local guide speaks English and leads the day, though "leads" means suggesting where to look and answering questions, not steering you through a script. The tour requires moderate fitness (the cave descent involves steps and uneven stone), and is not available to anyone under 16.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is Peggy's Cove Lighthouse and what do I actually do there?
Peggy's Cove is a fishing village on Nova Scotia's coast built around an iconic lighthouse surrounded by smooth granite boulders shaped by the sea. You get free time to explore the village, walk among the rocks, photograph the lighthouse and Atlantic views, and move at your own pace while the guide waits.
Can I choose which hidden gem I visit, or does the tour decide?
The guide takes you to two of four options (BernArt Maze, Ovens Sea Caves, Mahone Bay, or Blue Rocks) based on which are open that day. BernArt Maze and Ovens Sea Caves have seasonal closures, so substitutions happen without advance notice if either is unavailable when you tour.
How much time do I spend driving versus exploring the stops?
The tour runs 8 to 9 hours total. The guide allocates free time at each of the four main stops for you to explore, and the remaining time covers transportation between them in the minivan.
What is Lunenburg and what can I do there?
Lunenburg is a UNESCO World Heritage town with Victorian architecture, cobblestone streets, and a working harbor full of fishing boats. You have free time to visit the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, browse local art galleries and craft shops, eat fresh seafood at waterfront restaurants, or simply walk and photograph the harbor.
How many people will be on this tour?
The tour is limited to a small group of up to five guests traveling in a minivan. A minimum of two guests is required for the tour to operate.
Is there anything I should know before booking?
The tour requires at least moderate physical fitness, particularly if you visit Ovens Sea Caves, which involves descending steps and walking on uneven stone. The tour is not available to anyone under 16 years old, and it is not recommended for travelers who experience motion sickness. Lunch and breakfast are not included.
