The Experience

The put-in point sits 8 km south of Jasper town, and that's where the morning starts—you meet your guide, get fitted into clean gear, and listen to the safety talk while the river sounds get louder. The Athabasca River Mile 5 run is a 2-hour round trip, and it's designed so you spend the first ten minutes just floating, getting your paddle rhythm right and your eyes on the 360-degree mountain view. After that float comes the reason you're here: four or five sections of grade 2 rapids, big enough that everyone who wants to get splashed will, but calm enough that an unexpected swim is unlikely. The raft holds eight people plus the guide, so it's intimate without feeling cramped.
