The experience

The session starts at the operator's office downtown on Connaught Drive. After gear check and a brief overview, you drive 20 minutes to Morro Slabs, a limestone wall that sits right next to the Athabasca River. A short 10-minute hike gets you to the base of the rock.

Your guide sets up the rope systems and teaches you the fundamentals: how to use ropes to lower safely down the cliff, then how to belay. The technique that lets you and your partner safeguard each other on the wall. Once you've got the basics, you start climbing. Routes range from easy to challenging, and your guide coaches you through each one, adjusting the difficulty to match what you're ready for. If your arms tire, you lower back down, rest, and go again. The guide stays focused on safety and technique the whole time.

The experience runs daily from June 5 through September 15, in all weather. Bring layers and dress for the conditions. The operator welcomes all fitness levels. You just need enough stamina for a short hike and the willingness to try standing on your toes on a limestone wall. You'll sign a liability waiver before you start, and if you have any medical condition that might affect your ability to climb, let the guide know when you arrive.

Is this one for you?Pick this if you want to climb real rock outdoors with a guide handling rope setup and safety checks, so you can concentrate on learning technique rather than managing equipment.
